The wordshotpotato, for example, giveyou no idea at all to the meaning of the expression “hotpotato.”
The potato is a popularvegetable in the UnitedStates. Manypeoplelikebakedpotatoes, cooked in an oven or fire. Imaginetrying to carry a hot, bakedpotato in yourhand. It would be difficult -- evenpainful -- to doso. Now we are gettingclose to the meaning of “hotpotato.”
Somepublicly-disputedissues are highlyemotional. The issuesmust be treatedcarefully, or they will be difficult and painfulif an electedofficial has to dealwiththem -- as difficult and painful as holding a hotpotato.
Onesuchhotpotato is taxes...
Calling for highertaxescanmeandefeat for a politician. And yet, iftaxes are not raised, someverypopulargovernmentprogramscould be cut. And that
alsocanmake a politicianveryunpopular. So the questionsmust be dealtwithcarefully -- the samewayyouwouldhandleanyotherhotpotato.
Anotherexpression is “not sohot.” Ifyouasksomeonehow she feels, she mayanswer “not sohot.” What she means is she does not feelwell.
“Not sohot” also is a way of saying that youdo not reallylikesomething. Youmaytell a friend that the newplayyousawlastnight is “not sohot.” That meansyoudid not consider it a success.
A “hotshot” is a person -- often a youngperson -- whothinks he candoanything. At least he wants to try. He is verysure he cansucceed. But often he fails. The expression was born in the militaryforces. A “hotshot” was a soldierwhofiredwithoutaimingcarefully.
Hot is a word that is oftenused to talkaboutanger.
A personwhobecomesangryeasily is called a “hothead.” An angryperson's neckoftenbecomesred. We say he is “hotunder the collar.” Youcouldsay that yourfriend “is no hothead.” But he got “hotunder the collar” whensomeonetookhisradio.
In 1963, “hotline” appeared as a newexpression.
The hotline was a directcommunicationslinkbetween the leaders of the SovietUnion and the UnitedStates. The hotline had an importantpurpose: to preventaccidentalwarbetween the twocompetitorsduring the periodknown as the ColdWar. The Americanpresident and the Sovietleaderwereable to communicatedirectly and immediately on the hotline. This helpedpreventanyconflictduring an internationalcrisis.
